New City Arts Forum 2012, 20-22 April, Charlottesville, VA

While the landscape of the arts community is always changing, many questions remain the same, questions such as: What is the responsibility of the artist? Why do arts matter? How are artists funded? What makes good art? and What is the role of the church in the arts?

New City Arts in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA has organized an April forum to engage both the newly emerging and the perennial issues—of art, city, and society—faced by artists as they pursue their curious vocation.

New City Arts is a Charlottesville network of art practitioners, advocates, and enthusiasts pursuing human flourishing through the arts. We are committed to facilitating conversations, creating spaces where artist can create and share work, and fostering a network of community among artists, community members, and churches.

Presenters include professors at the University of Virginia and Calvin College, a representative from the National Endowment for the Arts, the CEO of National Arts Strategies, working artists, and writers–including Dan Siedell (author of God in the Gallery) and Nicholas Wolterstorff (author of Art in Action). We have paired the presenters together by interest and relationship, and hope to foster lively conversations about the evolving role of the artist, and the evolving landscape in which the artist works.

While many of the presenters are people of faith, the conference focuses on the intersection of the arts and society, within Christianity and beyond. It will be of interest to anyone looking to actively engage with the arts, who are interested in the call of the artist, and the challenges we face, as we create in our collective, curious world.

New City Arts invites you to join this conversation and this community.  Come listen as practitioners and philosophers address contemporary questions of our collective, creative world, and become part of a still-forming community that seeks to be attentive to the life and profession of the artist.

The Forum is April 20th- 22nd, and you can find more details here.
