Very interesting perspective Dave. Your tie to the incarnation is especially helpful. The primary sin of Babel was a disobedience to the charge God gave to Noah in Genesis 9:1 to multiply and spread out on the earth. It is clear from Genesis 11:4 that they did not want to "be scattered over the face of the whole earth." Other sins are at work here, such as their goal to "make a name for ourselves," but the disobedience of hovering together plays into your thoughts here. A civilization that does not spread out will eventually implode, as the depravity of our cities demonstrates. The implications for spreading out, but then coming back together in avatar form, pose new questions not necessarily dealt with in the Babel story.

Leonard Sweet has expressed an emphasis on the sense of touch in an world of avatars. Touching a body may be the only way to know the difference between an actual human and its avatar. He emphasizes this in an effort to push the church towards the ancient practice of physical touch in our ministries.

Thanks for your comment, Travis! The whole beaming project has stirred up all sorts of thoughts and questions well beyond the theological. So many, in fact, that the developers have been engaging ethicists and lawyers in trying to foresee and address potential difficulties and challenges: http://beaming-eu.org/ethical_and_legal_issues.

Thanks for drawing our attention to this development Dave. Your observation about beaming as being like 'the incarnation in reverse' is particularly insightful. There is a lot that could be explored along those lines and in comparison to Babel as well.

John,

Thank you for the kind words! Permission granted. I just ask that you include attribution and a link back to this post.

I wish I wasn't already presenting at another conference that weekend, as I'd love to attend. Hopefully our paths will cross again - it's great to find another organisation with a similar mission.

Blessings,
Cole

Your para beginning : Many modern institutes- echoes the very idea behind the formation of our own group here in Ireland (see above -the call for papers) You write very well with clarity and flair and I would like your permission to use the paragraph to explain the purpose to new members.

Hi Scott.

I'm not sure that Saunders does exactly what you're looking for. His goal in this work is to address a specific theme rather than to present the entirety of the superhero genre over the last 70+ years. However, he does present an argument (and a convincing one at that) for the value of studying "the superhero tradition" as a means of following cultural discourse on philosophical and theological topics, so he does write on larger issues as well. Although he is focused on these four specific figures, I believe that Saunders maintains a pretty good balance between "this character" and the genre as a whole.

In terms of "continuous narrative," each chapter effectively supports the book's overall focus on the nature of spirituality and love.

Best of luck with your work! There continue to be more and more resources available in this field, so you should be pretty well set.

DJ Djycus - a quick question - does the author restrict his findings to the four characters specifically, or does he deal with the idea of a superhero tradition per se? Most other works in the area have a tendency to become so absorbed in one character after another that there is no sense of continuous narrative...or to prove for one and thus prove for all. (I'm working my way towards shoring that the tradition as a whole has sublimated Christian values and ideas, specifically messianic ones - a thoguht that is often simply thrown at superman with no real depth or academic rigour (clearly not the case here))

Great review though. I will have to pick this up ASAP!
